Al-Anon is a Christian-based substance abuse and addiction treatment program. The stated purpose of the organization is to help alcoholics and addicts overcome their addiction through Biblical based education, counseling and discipline. Al-Anon’s goal is to get people back to God, remove dependency on drugs and the destructive influences of alcohol, and help develop personal accountability as they seek to recover. It also strives to educate the family and community about addiction, the symptoms and dangers of substance abuse, the obstacles in achieving sobriety and how to cope with it. It provides both individuals and families the tools necessary for successful living through its many programs and services.
Alcoholism and drug addiction are both diseases that affect the body, mind and spirit. Alcoholism is characterized by an ongoing need for alcohol or drugs to provide a safe form of recreation and to alleviate stress and depression. Drug abuse is characterized by the habitual use of a substance to alleviate pain or a symptom of a physical ailment. As one begins to experience problems with either substance abuse or addiction, they can work with a qualified professional at Al-Anon to help them identify the problem, determine their needs and create a plan for recovery.
In addition to the above mentioned goals, Al-Anon works with patients who have other drug addictions such as cocaine or methamphetamine abuse. Many family members and friends of an addicted individual often have no idea that the person actually has a drug addiction until the symptoms are noticeable enough to be noticed. This is where Al-Anon helps to educate the patient and their family and friends. Each year, thousands of individuals and their families are helped by the exceptional services offered by Al-Anon and related drug rehabilitation centers and programs.
