Asian Americans for Community Involvement (ACE) is a national nonprofit organization that develops leadership in people of Asian descent who have substance abuse problems and commit to improving the lives of all Asian Americans. It seeks to empower these disinclined individuals by providing them with a sense of personal identity, a sense of their culture and language, and the tools they need to empower themselves against prejudice, marginalization and injustice. Many of these problems are not unique to Asians or even the Asian American people but stem from attitudes and mindsets that limit individualism and deny the fundamental human rights of all people, particularly those in minority groups. Substance abuse and addiction can therefore not only destroy one’s physical body but also cause mental anguish, emotional trauma and even criminal activities.
The ACE program is a component of the Multi-Disciplinary Treatment Program (MDP), which is a collaboration of several different mental health, social services and drug treatment agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a comprehensive system for dealing with substance abuse and addiction and was established to serve people suffering from drug and alcohol dependencies. MDP is presently the only agency in the Bay Area that provides in-patient substance abuse and addiction treatment in a wraparound approach that combines substance abuse treatment, psychotherapy, and psychiatric treatment. Because of its highly specialized approach and the quality of care that it offers, MDP is considered a top choice of many physicians who are treating addicted patients.
In the year 2021, there were more than five hundred Asian Americans in drug rehab facilities. Although the numbers may have risen since then, this does not lessen the responsibility and the necessity for Asian Americans to come forward and seek help for substance abuse. When the addict realizes that they have a problem, they often feel ashamed and reluctant to disclose that they have a problem, but that should not stop anyone from getting the help that they need. It is crucial that Asian Americans make a commitment to getting the help that they need now and in the future.
