Foley Elaina L, a recovering addict of heroin and alcoholism, has been sober for over two years now. She is now focusing on becoming an integral part of a self-help organization dedicated to helping addicts like herself kick the habit once and for all. But there is one more obstacle standing in her way. Addiction to a mind altering substance such as heroin or another form of addiction presents its own set of obstacles to overcome. In fact, there are four: physical symptoms related to withdrawal, intense cravings, family and friends’ concern and lack of education regarding addiction and alcoholism.
After receiving a referral from a friend who is a licensed therapist, Foley Elaina L. is starting a 12 step program at a local alcohol and drug treatment center. She has been receiving psychological counseling as well as individual counseling to help her cope with the physical symptoms of withdrawal while working through her course of recovery. She is still in the process of writing up a comprehensive plan for her follow up care after finishing her rehab. She admits she is very tired and discouraged with the lack of support from those around her. “People do not want to help me,” she said. “They just want to be concerned about my safety.”
Unfortunately, the lack of educational information regarding addiction and alcoholism makes many people unfamiliar with the basics of quitting drugs, including the physical symptoms and the psychological aspects of quitting. Those unfamiliar with the mental and physical withdrawal symptoms may be too afraid or too indifferent to help. Those that know about addiction and alcoholism can offer support and encouragement.
