The mission of the Contra Costa County Behavioral Health Services is to promote healthy behaviors in children and to ensure their well-being through a comprehensive array of preventative and intervention services. These services are provided by licensed professionals who have received specialized training in substance abuse and disorders, developmental disabilities, and behavioral health. They provide treatment for parents and children alike, focusing on building loving relationships with families, promoting healthy interaction, decreasing risk for substance abuse and disorders, improving school attendance, promoting a healthy family life, and eliminating health problems that can arise from substance abuse and mental disorders. They also provide referrals to local substance abuse treatment providers where inpatient treatment or residential treatment may be an option for those who need it.
Substance abuse treatment is an integral part of the Contra Costa County Behavioral Health Services. This service offers a wide range of programs and resources that work towards ensuring that every child gets the help they need when it is needed most. Some of the substance abuse treatment programs offered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Division include, but are not limited to, drug detoxification programs, drug rehab centers, residential drug rehab programs, and mental health recovery programs. The goal of substance abuse treatment is to identify the underlying cause of the addiction, find effective ways to change the behavior that leads to drug abuse and help create an environment that will allow recovery from addiction. The aim of prevention is to learn how to live a drug free life without addiction, as well as educate the public about the dangers of substance abuse.
Substance abuse treatment requires multiple forms of treatment in order to be effective. Some of the prevention measures the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Division takes include educational information dissemination, community outreach and neighborhood stabilization, providing training and technical assistance, providing supervision to staff members, implementing community based recovery programs, implementing community specific projects, and requiring participation from the community in the overall effort to provide substance abuse treatment. In addition to all of these efforts, the countywide initiative, called Waco Round Up, seeks to address the substance abuse problem through community education, workforce development, and community events. Each of these strategies has been successful in reducing substance abuse through a wide variety of programs and services. Substance abuse treatment in the county of Contra Costa is a key element in achieving this goal.
