In the nation’s capital there exists a National Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Addictions and the chief medical officer for the city is worried. Dr. Joseph A. Volkoff is the medical officer and he chairs the board that sets policy for the entire city. According to him, the city’s long term drug and alcohol problem will be difficult if not impossible to solve. Drug rehab programs in the nation’s capital are being canceled due to lack of funds but the number of drug addicts has been increasing continuously over the last 10 years, he added.
Dr. Volkoff emphasized the need to find drug rehab centers in the nation’s capital that are properly equipped to treat drug addicts and their family members. Many of these drug rehab centers are located in areas where there are large numbers of drug addicts and their family members are also suffering from the consequences of the addiction. The lack of drug addiction treatment centers means less funding for the drug rehabilitation and it could lead to more drug addicts and family members suffering from the repercussions of the addiction. This could result in social problems and even higher crime rates. The National Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Addictions strongly discourages the cancellation of drug rehab programs and instead urges the community to help find a solution.
